Fake listings ask for money before you see a flat. Learn the warning signs and how to stay safe when renting through social media groups and websites.
How the scam works
A listing shows an attractive flat at a low rent. The 'owner' says many people are interested and asks for a booking fee or advance by bKash or Nagad before you can view it. After the payment, they stop answering.
Red flags
- Money is requested before you have seen the flat in person
- The rent is far below similar flats in the same area
- The owner is 'abroad' or can't meet, and there is only an agent's number
- Pressure to pay today to 'hold' the flat
- Photos that look like a hotel or also appear in other listings
- The exact building address is only shared after payment
Before you pay anything
- Visit the flat and meet the owner or caretaker
- Confirm the building address and ask the guard or neighbours
- Compare the rent with the area's typical range on BariViews
- Pay only after signing an agreement, and get a receipt
If you have been scammed
Keep the screenshots, the phone number used and the transaction ID. Report the number to your mobile financial service provider quickly, file a complaint at the nearest police station and report the listing on the site or group where you found it so others are warned.
How BariViews helps
Verified listings and tenant feedback make it harder for a fake flat to look real. Report duplicate or suspicious listings so the next person is protected.
